Clinton Easily Wins West Virginia's Primary - New York Sen. Hillary Clinton won a landslide victory in West Virginia's Democratic primary Tuesday, defeating Illinois Sen. Barack Obama by a margin of more than 2 to 1. Still, Obama's loss is unlikely to change the trajectory of the race.
Now, morning pundits are trying to suss out what it all means. There was Pat Robertson, who exclaimed something to the effect of "This is the first time in history that a corpse threw for six touchdowns." Nightmarish on many, many levels.
Conventional wisdom is that Senator Obama can't win the white working-class vote. However, he's won in states with relatively few minorities (or Starbucks)--states that were largely working-class and white. Is there something we're missing? Clearly.
My brother wondered about this as well, asking whether there was something in the combo of poverty and the races that created a challenging electoral mix. I found his argument compelling, but West Virginia is working-class and white and they didn't vote for Senator O.
Still looking. If you have any ideas (which I know you do), pass them along.
