American Values Alliance | Practical voice for progressive valuesWhy are the Democrats, with their majority, giving George Bush what he wants in terms of federal wiretapping? (See today’s NY Times.) And why are they letting off the hook the telecommunication companies who participated?
They’re just falling all over themselves to pat themselves on the back: Hoyer said he thought it struck “a fair balance.” A “fair balance” is an agreement that gives the president continued power to step on Americans’ civil liberties and then makes it impossible for them to sue the private companies that assist?
Pelosi’s all pleased because they got some little bit of language worked in that will supposedly prevent the president from “circumventing the law.” How effective is that going to be in an agreement that inherently allows the president to circumvent the law? In fact, while there was a 3-day limit on an "emergency" federal wiretap, they’ve extended it to 7 days!
The Dems need to collectively grow a pair.

Pete Visclosky didn't vote on the FISA bill. I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt but still plan on calling on Monday to find out why.
Baron Hill voted no. Good for him. Isn't he one of the Blue Dogs?

Our new progressive Democratic Congressman André Carson of Indianapolis, along with Baron Hill of southern Indiana, were the only 2 members of the Hoosier delegation to vote against the FISA Bill.
