Crowd Control as Mind Control

Sheila Suess Kennedy | 06/29/2008 - 07:31

Over at Dangerous Intersection, Eric Vieth has an interesting post on hecklers.

While he decries the lack of civility, he points out that George W. Bush's habit of making speeches only to carefully-pre-screened audiences (a practice that John McCain has also adopted) isn't just to spare the speaker discomfort. It has its roots in psychological research showing that the absence of visible dissent has real consequences for the way people interpret their own dissenting views.....

Rebecca Vasko | 06/30/2008 - 10:00 |  The President of the Hawks

What happened to the day when the President of the United States was just that—the president of not just the people who voted for him and who support his policies, but of all the people? The post at Dangerous Intersection makes me think of Cindy Sheehan, dismissed by conservatives as a “crackpot.” Like the word “heckler,” the word “crackpot” implies that Sheehan’s point of view was simply not worth considering; her actions were not the actions of a sane person, but rather some crazed lunatic. And this from people who can usually voice nothing but superlatives about the patriotism of and sacrifices made by those whose sons (or daughters) lose their lives in war.

Of course, that his been this administration’s M.O. for this war from the get-go: hide everything you can about it, including the fact that not all the parents and families of service men and women agree with you, and if you can’t hide it, dismiss them as crazies and don’t invite them to your speeches.

Is the focus on Palin's family over the top?
No. By pitching her family values as chief amongst her qualifications, she asked for it.

Yes. Family is off limits no matter how much the candidate uses them.

Not sure. It seems that we're supposed to consider family and other personal aspects--even if they don't impact policy.
