Civil Liberties

Good morn or evening, friends. Lalita Amos here and like The Blog Snob (who, along with new AVA contributor MelissaT inspired this post), I am an authentic American Negro.

The feeling of nausea that has overcome me at 4a.m. this morning, isn't due to the fact I'm finishing up a rather long (12 hour) night shift, nor is it due to the chinese food from about 6 hours ago that I probably should have put in the refridgerator some time ago. It's the sort of nausea that envelopes not only ones stomach, but ones soul as well...

As many of you know, CNN will be launching its series "Black in America" on 23 July with its Black Women and Familes program. The second day will focus on Black men.

This is definitely worth thinking about.

Over at Balkinization, Jack Balkin muses over the larger meaning of the passage of the new FISA legislation.

Over at Dangerous Intersection, Erich Vieth has a long post on flag pins. Here's a clip:

It's no secret that I was supporting David Orentleicher in the recent Democratic primary for 7th Congressional District. It wasn't that I had anything against Carson; I just preferred David, who has been one of the most effective and hardworking elected officials around.

Why are the Democrats, with their majority, giving George Bush what he wants in terms of federal wiretapping? (See today’s NY Times.) And why are they letting off the hook the telecommunication companies who participated?

I generally don't find myself in agreement with George Will about much, but this morning, he weighed in on the John McCain response to the habeas corpus ruling, and it got it absolutely right.

Per Ed Brayton, we get an absolutely unbelievable quote from John McCain. If anything, Ed is much too kind...this is really unforgivable.

Sheila Suess Kennedy | 06/12/2008 - 15:36

This should have been unanimous. I shudder to think what will happen if John McCain gets to replace Stevens, Ginsberg or Souter with more Scalia clones...

Pardon me if the title of this post sounds like a burble from My Fair Lady, but according to a report from Reuters:

During a fund-raiser in Denver, Obama -- a former constitutional law professor at the University of Chicago Law School -- was asked what he hoped to accomplish during his first 100 days in office.
