Statement on Assassination and Targeted Violence in Minnesota

“This tragic, horrifying attack is unacceptable, and we extend our deepest condolences to the victims, their families, and to the people of Minnesota - who have lost leaders devoted to public service and to building a better future for their communities.

“The American Values Alliance condemns—in the strongest possible terms—all political violence. The fatal shootings of State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband and shooting of State Senator John A. Hoffman and his wife in politically-motivated attacks in suburban Minnesota are devastating reminders that our democracy is under threat. These assassination attempts against public servants rip apart the fabric of our society and must be stopped.

“Over the past year alone, an assassination attempt was made on President Donald Trump during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, killing an attendee and injuring others. An antisemitic arsonist set fire to the home of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro while his wife and young son were sleeping inside. These threats are not theoretical—they are real, rising, and deadly.

“Let us be absolutely clear: political violence is un-American. It is an act of cowardice that steals the freedoms we cherish. In a nation founded on the principles of liberty, equality, and peaceful dissent, resorting to violence is a betrayal of everything the United States stands for. Violence is not how we express patriotism. It is how we destroy democracy.

“This is not a partisan issue. It is an American emergency.

“We applaud the elected officials—from both parties—who have spoken out with clarity and conviction against political violence. Their leadership affirms that while we may disagree on policies, we must be united in our defense of peace, rule of law, and mutual respect. Bipartisan voices that condemn violence and defend democratic principles are vital.

“But statements are not enough. Too many have remained silent—or worse, incited hostility and spread dangerous conspiracy theories. The burden is on all of us—citizens, civil society, media, faith leaders, business leaders, and neighbors—to stop the spread of political violence and demand a return to decency and security. The longer we wait, the more this sickness spreads.”
